The Pyramidal Pathway
Also known as the corticospinal tract, the pyramidal pathway is a group of interneurons that run from the motor cortex of the cerebrum to the spinal cord where they synapse directly with the alpha motor neurons. Specifically, these neurons originate in the primary motor cortexes of either cerebral hemisphere and travel down the internal capsule through the mesencephalon and medulla oblongata to the pyramids where the decussate and then descend through the dorsal lateral horns of the spinal cord. They synapse with lower motor neurons in the anterior horn of the spinal cord and the axons of the lower motor neurons then exit the spinal cord via the ventral root[40]. |
